Extreme Heat and Climate Change

After actually trying uchimizu this time, I was struck by how even a small amount of water, when sprinkled on the ground, can create a visible sense of coolness. While this is a long-standing Japanese tradition, I realized that reusing water—such as leftover bathwater—can also serve as an opportunity to reflect on current environmental issues. I also found that one of the appeals of “uchimizu” is how easy it is to practice in our daily lives, without requiring any special preparation.
Extreme heat has become a serious problem during summer. I think uchimizu is interesting because it is a traditional Japanese custom that can also help us think about the environment. It cannot solve climate change by itself, but using reused water and taking small actions in our daily lives can be a good opportunity to become more aware of environmental issues.
