Peace of Mind

In recent years, since summers in Japan have been so unbearably hot, I sometimes sprinkle water on my front yard and the street in front of my house. Sprinkling water helps alleviate the heat—at least in my yard and on the street in front of my house—and eases the feeling of being hot, which brings me a sense of calm.

Scientifically, uchimizu is said to cool the air because the evaporating water absorbs heat. However, personally, I doubt it has a significant physical effect.

Instead, I feel that by sprinkling the water myself, I subconsciously feel a sense of relief from the heat. This conscious act may actually lead to my own peace of mind.

Because of this, I believe that uchimizu is, for Japanese people, a deliberate ritual for finding inner calm.
