打ち水の起源は？　What Is the Origin of Uchimizu?

打ち水は、庭先や道路に水を撒いて涼を得る方法です。

16世紀の日本の戦国時代に確立された「茶の湯」がきっかけで、打ち水が生まれました。

茶の湯での打ち水は、礼儀作法の一つで、歓迎の気持ちをお客様に感じてもらうために行われていました。

その後の江戸時代には、俳句に詠まれたり、浮世絵に描かれたりと、一般的になったと言われています。

Uchimizu is a way to fight the heat by sprinkling water over your garden or the street outside your house to make the air cooler.

The Japanese tea ceremony ‘Chanoyu’ established in the 16th century during Japan’s Warring States Period was the beginning of uchimizu.

Water sprinkling during chanoyu was an element of etiquette for the purpose to warmly welcome their guests.

It is said that the act of uchimizu became common and was depicted in haiku and ukiyoe in the following Edo period.
